Most of us have been recommended at some point, to take a probiotic while taking medication for various ailments. However while most of us have taken the probiotic without any questioning, we weren’t sure why we were taking it, or which one to take since the ingredients all contain words that make us wonder if they are actually in English. We compiled a list of about 20 words that are related to probiotic and explained them in an easy to understand manner.

Before we start, I think it would be fair to define the word probiotic. Usually described as a beneficial bacteria or bugs it doesn’t really explain much, I mean would you take a “good” illness? The word probiotic literally means “for life”, and is defined by the World Health Organization as “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” In English, this means that probiotic can be found in food and or taken as a supplement and is bacteria that your body needs to help your immune system, keep your digestive system working properly and various other positive things.

Why take a probiotic if your body has them already?

Sometimes we can have too much of the bad bacteria in our body, and this throws it out of balance, by taking more probiotic’s it would keep us in check! And while you can get probiotic’s from certain foods, it usually is not enough and therefore taking a supplement too is recommended to help keep your body working efficiently.

Why take a kosher probiotic?

For many the answer is simple since they are following the Jewish dietary laws; however, everyone can benefit from a kosher probiotic. Besides for the probiotic being great, high quality, and effective in order for them to be certified all the ingredients must be listed on the label so you don’t get any unpleasant surprise. And after reading the definitions below you will be able to understand what you are taking!

Definitions:

Bacteria- Simple one celled organisms that live in a lot of different environments such as plants and living bodies. In our body’s digestive system, there are billions of bacteria—some beneficial and some that can be potentially disease-causing.

CFU or CFUs – Is short for Colony Forming Units, the scientific term for “number of organisms” this would be the count of viable live bacteria. While there is no scientific standard for the number of CFUs required to be “probiotic,” the legitimate, science-based research studies we’ve seen all use quantities in the billions.

Culture- A colony of living microorganisms (e.g. bacteria), grown by humans for a specific purpose.

FOS- Short for fructo-oligosaccharides, is a group of compounds related to, but not identical to, inulin.

Intestinal Microflora- Is billions of small organisms that live within our digestive tract.

Inulin- A prebiotic fiber that helps stimulate the growth of probiotic’s this is perhaps the best-known prebiotic. Inulin is naturally occurring in many edible plants such as asparagus, bananas, garlic, rye and wheat.

L.- The abbreviation for Lactobacillus, a family of bacteria. Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) is the most commonly used probiotic bacteria. Lactobacillus bulgaricus(L. bulgaricus) and Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) are other commonly-used strains.

Live, Active Cultures- All cultured products begin with live, active cultures: The microorganisms are alive and working (e.g., their primary work is to culture the milk). Subsequently, the heat used in the production of many products kills off the bacteria, or renders them inactive. Thus, any yogurt, for example, is made with “active cultures—if the cultures were not active, they would not turn the milk into yogurt. However, they may not survive the production process to have any human benefit. Thus, a claim that says, “made with live cultures” implies zero probiotic benefits. It does not say that the cultures are still alive. Similarly, “contains live cultures” does not mean that they are active. If you are seeking a probiotic benefit, you need “live and active cultures.”

S.- Streptococcus, a family of bacteria used as a probiotic, Streptococcus Thermophilus or S. Thermophilus is a frequently-used strain.

A growing number of Americans across the country are becoming more health conscious and their shopping carts are showing it – packed with organic produce; soy franks and burgers; spelt bread and pretzels; and a variety of vitamins and herb products.Today’s national supermarket chains are responding to this wholesome trend, featuring an expanding vitamin and herb section with multiple shelves of every combination, brand and potency. Thanks to the foresight and business acumen of a number of major vitamin companies, more and more kosher customers are frequenting these supplement sections, happily perusing an assortment of OU kosher brands.Words like antioxidant, ginkgo biloba, and glucosamine have made it into the kosher community’s vernacular, kitchen cabinets and daily nutritional regimen.

Since vitamins are considered diet enhancers, meant to supplement the nutritional deficiencies in processed food; they are considered food and, as such, require kosher certification. Many of the vitamins on the market come in gelatin capsules, commonly derived from non-kosher sources and are off limits to the kosher consumer. Aside from the issue of gelatin in the gel cap, vitamins may also contain non-kosher ingredients.

As more kosher consumers become cognizant of the need for kosher certification on vitamins, both brand name and generic vitamin companies are responding to the need – and profiting from the initiative.

THE PIONEERS IN KOSHER VITAMINS

The advent of kosher vitamins on American store shelves came about through the insight and ingenuity of a family-run “Mom and Pop” pharmacy in mid-town Manhattan. Abraham Freeda, a druggist who founded Freeda Vitamins in 1928, led the way for the burgeoning kosher vitamin industry as one of its first producers and sellers, “My parents (Freeda’s daughter and son-in-law), being very innovative, decided to formulate their own nutrients,” says Phillip Zimmerman, Ph.D., current chief chemist at Freeda Vitamins.“They bought a tablet machine and started manufacturing vitamins.” The Freedas and Zimmermans chose OU kosher certification for their new products. “The OU was and still is the name of the game,” says Dr. Zimmerman. “The gold standard.”

Over seven decades later, Freeda Vitamins are sold throughout the United States and also enjoy distribution in Israel and Holland. The family prides itself on being the first kosher vitamin company and the only vitamin company in the world that provides an extra tablet in every bottle – to cover the possibility of machine miscount.

By the 1970’s, America was in the midst of an explosion of research into the impact of nutrition on personal health. “You are what you eat” became the common catch phrase and health food stores sprouted up in towns and cities across the country.

In 1974, Jack Friedman, Ph.D., founder of Maxi-Health Research Inc, opened up a small health food store in Brooklyn with the goal of developing sophisticated vitamin products for the kosher community. He worked together with physicians to create kosher vitamin and herb formulas that would address particular ailments. Over three decades later, the company currently provides a variety of one hundred and fifty nutritional supplements. “Maxi-Health keeps updated on the latest in nutritional research and continues to get the highest quality products out there for the Jewish community,” says Dr. Friedman. “One can get Co Enzyme Q from China for a tenth the price of the Japanese product, which is of much higher quality, but we aren’t interested in poor quality.”

Ninety-five percent of the Maxi-Health line is under OU Kosher certification. “We went to the OU because they were the biggest; they were the most well known,” he says. “Many of our products come from different areas of the world and the OU personnel cover the globe; it made it a lot easier for us. We were also very satisfied with their knowledge about nutrition. We have many non-kosher clientele who look for the OU certification. They feel it is a purer product and monitored more carefully.”

Dr. Friedman, who holds a doctorate in nutrition, receives over one hundred phone calls a day from health-conscious consumers around the world seeking advice on how to treat various physiological conditions. “More than half of the problems, really more, start with poor nutrition and lack of knowledge,” says Dr. Friedman. “People don’t realize that one cup of soda has seven teaspoons of sugar and how unhealthy hydrogenated fat is. They don’t even realize that they are eating poorly. Today’s foods are depleted of nutrients, hence, the need for supplements.”

He cautions that many are unaware that many vitamins on the market are not kosher. “There are not only non-kosher nutrients, but also non-kosher bindings and fillers,” he says. “We were the first to come out with the maxi-caps, a kosher capsule.” He reports that both doctors and chiropractors recommend Maxi-Health products to their patients.

Another kosher vitamin pioneer concerned about the dearth of available kosher nutritional supplements on the market, Hyman Landau, president of Lantev Distributing Corporation, which distributes Landau Natural Foods and Vitamins, opened up a health food store in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn in 1981.“Customers were requesting certain items that were not available in kosher form,” says Landau. He decided to develop items on his own private label. Lantev distributes to New York City’s five boroughs, the country’s smaller kosher communities, as well as internationally “The vitamins were very well received, especially the chewables for children.”

Mr. Landau came out with specialty items such as a more advanced pareve formula of acidophilus and chewable B12s. Like Dr. Friedman, he is not looking to cut corners in order to save money if it means compromising on quality. “A lot of companies use animal-based stearates, which are less expensive; we use the kosher vegetarian base,” he says. Lantev chose OU certification for its products in response to customers’ preferences. “We’ve seen profit from the decision,” says Landau.“The customers are happy as well as steady.”

Now, don’t forget to take your (OU kosher) vitamins!

Children who received the prenatal fish oil tended to perform better in all areas of development

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have been shown to be helpful for a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, depression, and arthritis. Now there is more evidence on its importance to growing minds: Pregnant women who take fish oil supplements high in the fatty acid DHA may give birth to children with greater hand–eye coordination.

“During pregnancy, large amounts of DHA and arachidonic acid are deposited in the fetal retina and brain,” said Susan L. Prescott, MD, PhD, of the School of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Western Australia. “These fatty acids, found in fish oil, seem to be critical for normal nervous system and visual development.”

Benefits for babies

The 98 pregnant women in the study were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or a fish oil supplement providing 2.2 grams of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and 1.1 grams of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), both essential omega-3 fatty acids. They started taking the supplements 20 weeks into their pregnancies and continued until delivery.

Higher amounts of the protective omega-3 fatty acids were transferred to newborns in the group taking fish oil supplements compared to the placebo group. Babies with the highest levels of the omega-3 fatty acids in cord blood had the best hand–eye coordination when assessed at age 2 1/2 years.

Children who received the prenatal fish oil supplementation also tended to perform better in all areas of development studied, including personal, social, speech and hearing, performance, and practical reasoning. They also had higher scores for receptive language, average phrase length, and vocabulary scores. In previous research, infants given fish oil supplements have shown improved visual function.

For many of us our mornings do not start until we have had at least 1 cup of coffee. While we all know some of the negative aspects of coffee, we have either tried stopping or it just seems too hard to even think about it. We at Kosher Vitamins have finally found the perfect solution to this problem. Teeccino’s is an all natural organic delicious coffee substitute that can help you finally win the “battle” with coffee. This was actually featured on the Dr. Oz show as the best way to either cut back or completely eliminate coffee from your daily diet, to watch what he says click here: LINK.

I know after seeing the video above you will excited to buy Teecino but before you go ahead here is a list of some ingredients that are included in different flavors of Teeccino’s and why they are great for you!!

Teeccino’s all natural organic ingredients:

Carob- Teeccino’s imports all organic carobs from Italy and Spain for their yummy coffee substitute. Carob pods are highly nutritious and contain a variety of antioxidants known as flavonoids that has been studied to be highly effective in humans for protecting cells against free radical damage. And a unique ingredient in carob, pinitol, may help reduce insulin resistance, keep blood sugar stable and is a natural energy boost since the pinitol is helping the cells take in more energy.

Barley- High in antioxidant known as proanthocyanidins (OPCs) which has been thought to be the reason the French have a much lower rate of heart disease although they eat saturated fat.

Chicory Root- Beverages made with roasted chicory root have naturally occurring high inulin content. Inulin is a prebiotic that supports a healthy population of beneficial digestive flora in the intestines. Also Teeccino is creating new trade by partnering to grow organic chicory in India with smallholder farmers who need a sustainable income crop to support their families!!

Dates & Figs- Both dates and figs contribute potassium and other nutrients that are water soluble and easily absorbable from a cup of Teeccino’s Mediterranean flavors. Potassium is a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Low intake of potassium-rich foods, especially when coupled with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension and other cardiovascular problems, and as with barley both dates and figs are high in the antioxidant known as proanthocyanidins (OPCs).

Ramon Nuts- Ramon nuts are actually the seed of the ramon fruit. They have zero fat and are gluten-free; Ramon flour is very high in potassium, fiber and tryptophan, the amino acid that helps calm stress and anxiety. Ramon nuts do not contain tree allergens like almonds, walnuts and pecans. Therefore people sensitive to almonds can drink Teeccino’s Maya flavors instead! In partnership with ForesTrade in Guatemala, Teeccino has created new trade for villagers living in rural communities in the Maya Biosphere Reserve where they wild-harvest ramon nuts in the Peten Forest.

Almonds- Teeccino’s Mediterranean flavors contain golden roasted almonds that create a rich, nutty flavor yet don’t add any fat to a cup of Teeccino. Almonds are nutritionally dense food and contribute to the potassium in brewed Teeccino. They also have one of the highest contents of vitamin E of any commonly eaten foods. Along with their content of magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron, almonds make a heart-healthy and nutritious food. Almonds also contain significant quantities of antioxidants including proanthocyanidins (OPCs) and flavonoids called catechins that are also in green tea. Studies suggest that almonds have increased antioxidant potency by the synergistic combination of over 20 flavonoids with vitamin E, all in one little nut.

Dandelion Root- Dandelions have a long tap root that is dark brown on the outside, but milky white on the inside. Its bitter notes come from its glycoside, taraxacin, along with other terpenoids that are thought to have a beneficial effect on the liver and to stimulate the digestion. It has a reputation as a mild diuretic for which it earned the French common name, “pissenlit” or “wet the bed”. Dandelion root also contains polysaccharides and inulin, which may be responsible for some of the immune stimulating effects that dandelion root, has been shown to have in some studies.

Natural Flavors- Teeccino selects the highest quality, pure natural flavors that are made from flavoring constituents that are extracted from natural ingredients like fruits, spices, herbs and even coffee. For instance, vanilla extract is made from infusing vanilla beans into alcohol and water. Peppermint comes from both the leaf and the essential oil. Citrus flavor is produced with a hint of orange oil. Chocolate flavors are created from cocoa powder.

It is difficult for people to understand how they can use coffee flavor without having any coffee in Teeccino. The components of coffee flavor can be extracted from a number of natural ingredients that include coffee, chicory and even, believe it not, garlic! It’s hard to imagine that coffee and garlic share the same flavor component, but they do. The expertise of flavor chemists allows them to derive flavors by isolating them from other compounds that don’t contribute to flavor.

All Teeccino flavors are ‘organic compliant’ which means that no ingredients are allowed in them that have been extracted using synthetic solvents or that are not permissible in organic products according to the USDA National Organic Program. Teeccino flavors do not contain any constituents from meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, milk, or edible yeast. Teeccino does not allow any monosodium glutamate (MSG) or any derivatives of MSG, propylene glycol, or preservatives in its flavors.

We don’t want to delay you for even a moment longer go to our website and try one of the flavors features in the news recently such as: French Roast Herbal Coffee, Original Herbal Coffee, Hazelnut Herbal Coffee and Vanilla Bean Herbal Coffee.

And let us know what you have found the hardest about quitting coffee is and what the best thing about Teeccino’s is, we would love to hear opinion.

Did you know that in a recent survey they found that approximately 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and 79 million are pre diabetic that means that more than 1 in every 20 people you know have diabetic and this is not including those that are pre diabetic. The number to us seems outrageously high working in the supplement industry we knew there had to be something to help. We stumbled across a great product by the company Green Silk called Green Formula 1.

Originally we wanted to write all the research and information we found on this product and its effectiveness but the post just kept getting longer and longer. So we decide to just post some of the information that stuck out to us and not bore you all too much!!

The main ingredient used in the Green Formula 1 is Mulberry leaf this is amazing because:

The Mulberry Leaf is a unique plant that can provide added support to your Type II diabetes care or the care of someone you love. It is used to treat a variety of health issues including diabetes, lowering blood pressure, assisting to regulate the digestive system, lowering LDL level, arterial plaque, weight loss and colds. Due to the high levels of active ingredients it has prompted support from doctors and medical researchers worldwide.

How does it work?

One of the most unique qualities of the Mulberry Leaf is that it contains an effective compound called 1-deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ) which:

Inhibits carbohydrates, starches, and sucrose absorption

Prevents intestinal enzymes from passing sugars into the bloodstream

Lowers overall calorie intake

By preventing large amounts of monosaccharide from entering into circulation, mulberry leaves helps prevent and fight diabetes. Because it blocks unwanted excessive sugars before they even enter the bloodstream.

As a natural supplement, the Mulberry Leaf doesn’t just stop at improving blood glucose level. Full of antioxidants, high levels of protein, iron, calcium, vitamins A, B’s, and C, Mulberry Leaf also has the potential to lower cholesterol and reduces fatty buildup along the arteries— a great health benefit for anyone!

The month of March may bring different feelings to many people. For some it’s the start of the hectic Passover cleaning, for others, it’s the month we realize we have failed our New Years goal to be healthier. However lets go back in time, a few thousand years ago, before the New Year’s resolutions, and before ipods, and cell phones. Try to envision a simpler time, before any fad diets began and before there was an obesity epidemic, to a time when there were only cavemen.

While most of us to not wish to live in the time period described above, we don’t realize that there were some benefits at that time. The caveman or our Paleolithic ancestors lived healthier and more energetic lives. What is the main difference between the two time periods? The answer is simple our diets.

Most of our daily diet involves overly processed, overly sweetened and fast foods, and while many of us try to eat healthier we never seem to achieve our goals completely. The Paleo Diet is the opposite and consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. The difference in the two diets is very clear and it makes it easier to understand why we are in a generation that obesity has become an “epidemic”.

Designs for Health understands that while this diet may be something you may want to try, not all of us have the time to spend the time cooking and sometimes just want to grab something to eat on the go. PaleoBar™is great tasting, low in net carbohydrates, rich in omega-3 and coconut oils, and contains phosphatidylcholine and covalent bonded glutamine. PaleoBar™ is great tasting, low in net carbohydrates, rich in omega-3 and coconut oils, and contains phosphatidylcholine and covalent bonded glutamine. PaleoBar™ is made with exceptional quality whey protein rich in immunoglobulins and lactoferrin. PaleoBar™ is also fructose, sugar, and artificial sweetener free.

What is Ubiquinol?

Your body naturally produces CoQ10 and then converts it to its active form Ubiquinol, the nutrient essential for cellular energy function. It is the key component in 95% of your body’s energy production, and provides sustained, natural energy from within. In addition, Ubiquinol delivers antioxidant protection that CoQ10 can’t provide, and protects your heart and other organs from free radical damage.
Around the age of 30, your body’s ability to produce and convert CoQ10 to its active form Ubiquinol diminishes significantly. Taking a Ubiquinol supplement helps to restore optimal levels of Ubiquinol in the body that would otherwise diminish with age and various health conditions, including fatigue and aging. Some prescription medications can further deplete the amount of CoQ10 produced in your body.

Supports Heart Health

Ubiquinol is essential for heart health because it provides cellular energy to the heart, the organ in the body that requires the most energy to perform at its best. Unlike conventional CoQ10, Ubiquinol is an antioxidant, so it provides even more protection to the heart. Over the past three decades, CoQ10 has been recognized for its benefits to general health and wellness as well as cardiovascular and neurological health.

Statin Drugs

Ubiquinol also is ideal for persons on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. In addition to reducing the amount of bad cholesterol in the liver, statin drugs can reduce the amount of CoQ10 in the liver as well. A lack of CoQ10 in the body can lead to chronic fatigue and muscle pains.

Ubiquinol provides Natural Energy

Health conditions such as stress, fatigue and aging diminish the amount of Ubiquinol found in the body. Ubiquinol is a key component in 95 percent of the body’s energy production. Taking an Ubiquinol supplement helps to restore optimal levels the body needs to feel healthy and energized. Although most will not get a stimulant effect from taking Ubiquinol, many describe the energy benefits from Ubiquinol as feeling a lack of tiredness that they usually experience throughout the day.

Support for Vital Organs

Supplementing with Ubiquinol will restore healthy levels of CoQ10 in plasma and organs for more efficient energy production. This typically results in more energy and stamina, as well as better overall health.

Slowing of the aging process

Ubiquinol is the strongest known lipid soluble antioxidant. It protects cells against damage from free radicals and oxidative stress, which are associated with the aging process and many age-related conditions.
CoQ10 can be found in food; however the typical Western diet supplies only about 5 mg a day. To provide 30 mg of CoQ10, one would have to eat one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef or two and a half pounds of peanuts. Additionally, absorption of dietary CoQ10 is slow and limited because of its large molecular weight and the fact that it’s not water soluble. For the first time, a kosher stabilized Ubiquinol form of CoQ10 is now available in Maxi Co q Ubiquinol, providing 100 mg of high-absorption CoQ10 in a single liquid maxicaps.
The source of this high end product is the well known Kanek Company located in Japan. It includes D-Limonene, it improves CoQ10’s absorption rate within the body. It also protects Ubiquinol from oxidization, which improves its solubility and enhances intestinal absorption therefore providing superior biological value.

How it began:

It is said that, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” As a long-time vegetarian and finicky snacker, Robert decided to create his own wholesome, satisfying munchies that would support a healthy lifestyle. A banker by profession, Robert took over the kitchen and six months later, voila! Chef Robert emerged with amazingly tasty and nutritious premium fruit snacks. Robert named the new product Matt’s Munchies after his son, Matthew, who helped develop the unique flavors. With intentions as pure as their products Chef, Matt and Sous Chef Linda (momz) seek to brighten the snacking landscape together with their exciting munchies!

Chef Roberts LLC is a family owned and operated business. In 2009, the family moved their factory from New York to Santa Ana, CA. Brothers Joe and Sam, and Diana are all involved; it’s a family enterprise!

What they have made:

One of the biggest challenges in a kosher kitchen is preparing bug-free leafy green lettuce and fresh herbs to serve as part of your healthy, delicious meals. Now, with the new Kosher Innovation Bug Checker XL Portable Light Board™, you can save time, money, eat healthier and enjoy a greater variety of healthier foods.

You will also be able to check carefully, comfortably and with confidence. These are the three “C”s that the idea of the Bug Checker XL is founded upon.

1. Check Carefully – Instead of checking against an overhead light or in front of a window, you can check your produce more closely, right in front of you. The light from the Bug Checker shines through the leaves but not through the insect, making it easier to see what’s on your veggies.

2. Check in Comfort – the Bug Checker is portable which means you don’t have to be limited to standing at the counter near an electrical outlet. Set yourself up comfortably at a table, sit down and allow yourself to focus better on the actual checking. Why should you have to stand on the hard floor and check for bugs in an awkward location? This makes the Bug Checker more Convenient than something that must always be plugged in. Hey! That’s another “C” word!

3. Check with Confidence - there’s nothing wrong with the “traditional” way of checking for bugs–using a window or holding your lettuce up to an overhead light. But what if it’s dark or cloudy outside? And what if you don’t want to have sore arms with water dripping down them? That’s why the Bug Checker XL was invented. Now checking is easier and more convenient. You can check when you need to and with less mess. You’ll have consistent light and the Bug Checker is safe to use with wet produce.

The new Kosher Innovations Bug Checker XL™ provides all the benefits of a professional light box, but was designed specifically for the private kosher kitchen. It’s compact in size for easy storage, uses safe low voltage LED lights and rechargeable batteries and is reasonably priced.

SAVE TIME
Simply place each leaf (after soaking and rinsing) flat on the Kosher Innovation Bug Checker™ and you will instantly see any bugs that may be there. The bright light shines through the leaf, but not through the bug.

AVOID EYE STRAIN
The LED light technology of the Bug Checker XL™ illuminates the leaf evenly from beneath. It eases eye strain because you don’t have to look upward while trying to use an overhead light.

SAVE MONEY
Those bagged salads are expensive and can be limp and tasteless and often need checking as well. Now you can buy more inexpensive fresh, crispy, flavorful produce in a wider variety.

HEALTHIER FOOD AND MORE VARIETY
You don’t have to avoid the fresh vegetable section of your supermarket any longer. Now you can have really great salads, prepare more interesting dishes and up your vitamin intake. Think of the health benefits of eating dark leafy greens rich in antioxidants. What a gift to yourself and your family!

The Bug Checker XL™ is easy to store and easy to use. The LED lights are sealed in a water resistant matte white style frame. It can be operated using the rechargeable batteries or electricity and even recharges while it’s plugged in. The OU Guide to Preparing Fruits and Vegetables’ says that

“A light box is indispensable for bug checking.”

Why not check out this great product and many others from Kosher Innovation at Koshervitamins.com or give us a call at (800) 645-1899.
